University Heights Madison Real Estate & Homes

"We are a lively, walkable, bikeable neighborhood with easy access to the UW campus & hospital. You can easily plant roots here that will last for generations." -University Heights resident

More than just any 106-acre neighborhood, University Heights is one of five Madison Historic Districts. The designation came in 1985 at the request of residents who wished to retain its Old World ambience and wanted more protection than provided by its National Register of Historic Places listing in 1982. More about University Heights

Established in 1894, University Heights has attracted intellectuals (streets such as Van Hise & Bascom are named for past University presidents) and prominent business people with a preference for life on an oak-shaded hillside to the cramped quarters of central-city living. Those affluent enough to build in University Heights left a suburban design and architectural legacy of impressive homes on large, landscaped lots. Neighborhood homes offer a drive-through education in architectural design and prominent 20th Century architects. Queen Anne, Craftsman, Prairie, Tudor, Period Revival, and Usonian styles are all present, with homes designed by Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Keck and Keck, and other nationally and regionally noted architects. Today, University Heights seems to occupy a place slightly outside of time, still exuding the style and sentiment of the era of its creation. Madison Magazine recently voted University Heights one of Eight Great Madison Neighborhoods.

University Heights Lifestyles

With its walking-distance proximity to the UW campus and UW Hospital, University Heights has no shortage of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Events at Camp Randall Stadium and the Kohl Center are a quick stroll away. Nearby stores clustered around the intersection of University and Midvale Boulevards to the west include what many consider to be the best grocery and wine stores in town, as well as organic and other specialty groceries. Regent Street to the east and south is gateway to a diverse collection of restaurants and galleries. The Capitol Bike Trail bisects the neighborhood for easy commuting and recreation. There’s even public golf nearby at 9-hole Glenway golf course and 18-hole Odana Hills golf course.

Neighborhood Schools

Public schools serving University Heights include Franklin-Randall Elementary, Hamilton Middle, and Madison West High School. Private Edgewood High, on the Edgewood University campus, serves students seeking a Catholic education, as well as those seeking a well-rounded liberal arts curriculum in preparation for college. If your children are still living with you after high school, they can walk from University Heights to the U.W.-Madison or Edgewood College to attend classes. University Heights homes are also within easy walking distance of the university campus and hospital.
